Kindred Artist of the Week: Tanya McAllister

Kindred Artist of the Week: Tanya McAllister

"Don't be afraid to have your piece look crazy and messy at first, with patience it will all come to together."

Presenting our Kindred Artist of the Week series! We are big fans of all the artists we work with and we are so excited to share their stories!

This week’s featured artist is local artist Tanya McAllister, whose ceramic wearables capture the wild charm of our home, and who will be at Kindred Post tonight with a pop up shop of her work!

Who are you?

Tanya McAllister of Homeworld Jewelry

What do you do?

I make jewelry, both statement pieces and minimalistic ones. I mostly work with ceramic, but I experiment with wire and bead work as well.

Who/what inspires you?

Most of my designs are based on the landscape and wildlife of my homeworld, Juneau, Alaska. I am also inspired by the shapes and colors I would like to add to my outfits.

What’s your favorite moment in the process?

Above all, I love working with the clay at the very beginning! Of course, getting to wear the piece at the end is pretty fun too.

What’s a trick of your trade, or a piece of advice for other artists in your medium?

I think clay is such a forgiving medium because you create an image and then physically tweak the shape until it looks they way you imagined it. My advice for working with clay is; don't be afraid to have your piece look crazy and messy at first, with patience it will all come to together.

What’s next?

Along with my jewelry, I'd love to get into making ceramic decoration and household items.

Stop by the shop tonight to see more of her work!
